Among the numerous works by Efrem Podhaits for children, Thumbelina is the most popular. For the production at the Ural Opera, the composer made a new edition, adding scenes for the children's choir and replacing spoken fragments with a melodic recitation.
Director Nadezhda Stolbova: "This is a story about a modern girl, told in a language understandable to both children and teenagers. Unlike Andersen's fairy tale, the heroine of the play is named Anya, and she is fighting for herself and her life. In the final, Thumbelina gets the perfect family: the husband is the Prince, Ole Lukoye is the father, the Martin is the mother. This is an important level of our history — to convey an understanding of the family as it can be."
