Peter Ludwig Hertel

(1817–1899)

Born in Berlin. He studied violin and composition under Eduard Rietz, Friedrich Schneider, Adolf Marx. Since 1858 and until his dying day he worked as a chapelmaster and composer at the Royal Opera House. In 1860 he worked as a visiting conductor at London’s Covent Garden.

He constantly cooperated with choreographer Paul Taglioni. He wrote almost two dozens ballets for him. Two ballets entered Russian scene: Die Abenteuer von Flick und Flock  (1858; performed in Moscow Bolshoi Theater in 1891) and La Fille mal gardée (The Wayward Daughter) (1864; premiered in the Bolshoi Theater in Saint Petersburg in 1885). Also Hertel issued numerous dancing pieces.
