Turandot, the last opera in the classical Italian opera repertoire, remained unfinished. According to Puccini’s drafts, it was finished by different composers at different times. The Ural Opera refers to the traditional closing by Franco Alfano – a happy ending, where the impregnable Chinese princess responds to the kiss of the Unknown Prince, an applicant for her hand, who solved three of her riddles and thus avoided execution. In his debut in Ekaterinburg, the French director Jean-Romain Vesperini and the artist Dirk Hofacker (who worked on the production of Eugene Onegin) promised to show on stage a fabulous medieval China in all its eastern splendor and wealth. The director explains his method: "I'm not interested in intellectual concepts but in working with the score and the libretto, which is such a rear case nowadays".
